How to Buy a Frame Drum 🌸⚪️🌸 Choosing your Layne Redmond Style Tambourine, with Barbara Gail

The Rhythm Inlet's Barbara Gail talks about how to choose or buy a Layne Redmond style tambourine, a member of the frame drum family. TIME-STAMPED CONTENT CHAPTERS, AND AMAZON LINKS* TO SOME TAMBOURINES I LOVE, ARE LISTED BELOW! Hi, I'm Barbara Gail from The Rhythm Inlet, a senior student of the late great Layne Redmond. In this video I'm comparing some of the headed tambourines from my personal collection. This drumming style is quite possibly my all-time favorite, of all the hand-drums I've been playing, teaching, performing, and retailing, since the 90's! 😁 In this video I'm talking about and demonstrating on various tambourines, geared for both students and players, highlighting the differences between mylar and fiberskyn heads vs. animal skin heads, and the flared nickel silver "Lotus" style jingles vs. "clamshell" brass riq (or riqq) style jingles. Thanks to Layne and her students, the ancient frame drum has been gaining popularity during the past 25 years, and the tambourine is what she primarily played and taught for much of that time. So let's go over what specifically you might want for the Layne Redmond style of playing the tambourine. Included are a Remo brand Layne Redmond Series "Lotus", a Remo Layne Redmond Series "Riq", a Cooperman tambourine, other Remo tambourines, different tunable tambourines, and the traditional Egyptian riq. I'll share my thoughts about the pros and cons of each of these, reasons why I love this style of drumming for both ceremony and celebration, and lots and lots of inspirational photos of "Moonrise: Daughters of an Ancient Pulse" and "DrumRise! the Art of Women's Drumming", the 2 women's drum troupes I've led over the years, in their tambourine processions. 🌸⚪️🌸 ▬▬ Contents of this video ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 0:00 - Introduction 1:14 - Let's talk about jingles 2:25 - Tambourine with a 'head' 2:50 - Definition of a Frame Drum 3:20 - Mylar head or animal skin?? 3:47 - Mylar headed tambourines 3:53 - Remo's Layne Redmond Series, the Lotus & the Riq 4:28 - The symbolism of 5 jingles on a riq 5:06 - Pros & cons of a Mylar-headed tambourine 5:50 - Remo's TA-5210 tambourine for beginners 8:07 - External tuning on a plastic headed tambourine 9:15 - Cooperman's internally tuned Glen Velez Mediterrasian Tambourine 10:57 - Surface treatments of plastic-headed drums 11:42 - Tambourine jingles vary 13:10 - The Layne Redmond Riq 14:24 - Egyptian riqs 14:42 - Goatskin heads, pros & cons 20:32 - Featherweight tambourines 20:58 - Decorating your drumhead? 23:20 - What kind of tambourine are you looking for, or have? 23:44 - Wanna learn how to play the tambourine with me? 😊 24:35 - Are you shopping for a tambourine, or have one? 25:10 - Let me know!
