Radiotherapy or surgery of the axilla after a positive sentinel node in breast cancer patients

Prof Emiel Rutgers speaks to ecancer at SABCS 2018 about the AMAROS trial looking into using radiotherapy or surgery of the axilla after a positive sentinel node in breast cancer patients. He explains that the main aim of the trial was to show that the auxiliary occurrence rates of lymph node metastasis was equal by both modalities and that the radiotherapy would involve less side effects. Prof Rutgers explains that the 5 year results showed very low event rates in the axilla in both groups and much less side effects in the radiotherapy group however many were critical of the followup time being too short. He reports that from the 10 year follow up the results show that the number of events is still really low, showing that both treatments are equal in regards to fighting the cancer.
