Level 4 Option Drill with New Rapier Fencer

“[This drill] felt like real fighting.” Today I want to show off the great work Fiore has been putting in. She is the the Baronnes of Carolingia in the SCA and is a new fencer. This is our fifth session training together and we just added in Option Drills in session four. We built up to this Level 4 Option Drill over the course of 45-minutes, doing some technical block training and then adding it into the Option Drill until we got to this version. From the Student’s Finding… 1️⃣ Coach hesitates, Gain & Strike 2️⃣ Coach pushes hard laterally, Strike via Cavazione 3️⃣ Coach performs a simple line change, Strike via Contracavazione 4️⃣ Coach attacks via cavazione, Parry & Riposte As you can see, she struggled a little bit with differentiating a simple line change from an attack via cavazione, so after this video we worked on a simple Level 2 Option Drill with just those two cues, and we did it super slow so she had plenty of time to get enough information to make the right tactical choice. This drill is a lot for someone new and Fiore did super well. She’s a pleasure to train with. I also love that she’s able to laugh when she messes something up and is able to find joy there. Failure is part of the learning process and I’m really glad she’s able to find joy there. As a competitor, Justin has won numerous rapier tournaments in the SCA -- both in singles and in group melee -- including Carolingia's Baronial Champion, East Kingdom Crown Champion, and named 6x to the Pennsic Champs team. He is 15th member of the East Kingdon’s Order of Defense, holds a Silver Broach and Maunche for his historical martial arts research, and a Silver Wheel and Silver Crescent for his coaching. Outside of the SCA and the Academie, Justin teaches rapier at Athena School of Arms, has taught workshops at events such as Iron Gate Exhibition (IGX), and is a certified personal trainer through NASM.
