A Conversation with James Carey- March 15, 2002

Interviews conducted by Frank A. Moretti Columbia University March 15 and April 8, 2002 James W. Carey is recognized as one of the past century's most acute analysts of communications. Having theorized on topics as varied as the ideological implications of the telegraph, the ritualism underlying our perusal of the daily newspaper, and the emergence, within his own field, of the intellectual as pop-culture icon, Carey introduced to the field of communication studies a degree of breadth, critical rigor, and political consciousness that would have been inconceivable without his contributions. In a field of inquiry increasingly characterized by quantitative analysis, Carey was a rarity; a scholar whose work was reflective of, but not commandeered by, the cultural turn. Carey eschewed blind allegiance to any particular methodological affiliation: his approach, like the world that he described, was complex rather than cut-and-dried. In these extended interviews, for the first time, Carey discusses his lifelong intellectual preoccupations and revisits many of the main themes of his scholarship. Carey connects the diverse strands of his intellectual legacy, offering a conversational exploration of its contours and complexities. This interview is a companion to "James W. Carey: Sentinel of Democracy" by Frank A. Moretti and Annie Rudd.
