With less protoporphyrin to bind to, iron may build up in the bone marrow and in other organs. Sideroblastic anemia can be divided into congenital (X-linked deficiency in ALA synthase) and acquired etiologies (drugs, toxins, and nutritional deficiencies). The hallmark of the disease is ringed sideroblasts present on a bone marrow aspirate after staining with Prussian blue. The treatment for sideroblastic anemia varies based on the different causes.
