Japan Speedrun: Part IV [Kyoto]

Oct 6 – We began the day with a traditional Japanese breakfast at the hotel. Before checking out, we walked to Osaka castle and garden. It was nice to see the architecture and experience the history. We caught our train to Kyoto and checked into our ryokan room, which was spacious with a corner view. On our way to the Imperial Palace, we stopped for lunch at a udon shop. The Imperial Palace had a small, informative museum describing the ground's developments over time. Tours through the inside of the court were open to walk ins. We got a snack at a crepe shop and then walked to Nijo Castle, but it was sadly closed to visiting by the time we got there at 6pm, so we took our first Kyoto subway ride back to the ryokan. After a quick rest, we headed out to Nishiki Market and nearby shopping streets. Besides our dinner at a seafood don restaurant, there were plentiful opportunities for takoyaki including a freshly cooked, premium custard filled pastry. We got shoes at Billys and clothes at Uniqlo, which we dropped off at the ryokan. Finally, we set off for Fushimi Inari around 9:45pm. It was quite empty and beautiful although slightly spooky at night. We walked 16.5 miles. Oct 7 – We took the bus to Saihoji. The experience started with copying sutras in the temple, and then we took our time walking around the gardens. We found a cafe near the hotel and took a break before heading to Nara. In the deer park, it was a little underwhelming, but what made the city worth the journey was the giant Buddha statue in Todaiji. We also were able to get freshly made mochi at Nakatanidou. Since dinner the night before was so good, we went back to get another seafood don bowl and then had an early bedtime. We walked 10.3 miles. Oct 8 – We arrived at Kiyomizudera before the gates even opened. There were a bunch of other people who got there early as well, but overall we were able to enjoy the temple without crowds. After leaving Kiyomizudera, we walked past Hokanji and through Yasaka. When things started to open, we stopped for a traditional Japanese breakfast at Yuba Cuisine. We got to Kodaiji when it opened and were able to fully explore both the temple and its neighboring Entokuen. We went to Ninigi for coffee and cake break. On our way to Heianjingu we saw a massive performance by a gathering of local students. The next stop was Nanzenji and by that time the drizzle had picked up. We were able to buy a super cheap umbrella near the temple and had a good though wet time walking along the aqueduct. It was a short walk from there to the Philosopher's Path by Eikando but the rain made the journey more tiring. The path led us all the way to Higashiyama Jishoji. We were exhausted, but still managed some nice photos. The bus back to the Ryokan was packed. When we arrived, we booked a private bath, which felt great after a long and damp day. For dinner, we went to the Kawaramachi area and got all you can eat Yakiniku at Aburiya. After taking a look at Pontocho, we walked back to the Ryokan along Kiyamachidori. We walked 13.6 miles.
