On the Hills of the Northern Pentlands

A walk in the Pentland Hills Regional Park, in the northern section between Penicuik and Edinburgh. We initially make our way by Glencorse Church, and head up a steep narrow road to Castlelaw where we explore the Iron Age hillfort and its underground souterrain. Skirting Castelaw Hill, we then make our way through fields of purple heather, now on a small part of the Pentland Way, to the top of Allermuir Hill, marked on ordnance survey maps as a viewpoint. It does not disappoint. The views from here are breathtaking. Looking south, deep into the Pentland Hills, we can see Turnhouse Hill, Carnethy Hill, Black Hill, Gask Hill and Bell's Hill, all beautifully arranged around the Logan Burn, Loganlee Reservoir and Glencorse Reservoir. The view and arrangement of this small bundle of hills is simply stunning. From there we pass over Caerketton Craigs and make for Caerketton Hill, and the views keep on coming. We can see the the bridges over the Firth of Forth at Queensferry, North Berwick Law, and even mountains far far away, like Ben Lomond and Ben Ledi. We can see what looks like the whole of Central Scotland. From Caerketton Hill we drop down to the ski centre in Hillend Country Park, known as the Midlothian Snowsports Centre. A truly awesome hill-walk with some of the best views in Scotland.
