Cinema House: an opportunity to celebrate the experience of collective film viewing. For one weekend a month, G5A’s black box theatre transforms into a single-screen theatre dedicated to independent, regional, and contemporary cinema. For the fourth chapter of Cinema House, G5A presented a retrospective with Shyam Benegal. Known and regarded as the pioneer of parallel or ‘middle’ cinema, Shyam Benegal is widely considered as one of the greatest filmmakers post the 1970s. Shyam Benegal’s films have pushed audiences to leave the theatre with haunting questions, while also unraveling social complexities, exploring truth without judgment, and having audiences engage with characters that are full-blooded and pulsating, in lived moments. Shyam Benegal’s fourth film, Bhumika, marks a substantial departure from his first three works. Bhumika is inspired by the autobiography Sangte Aaika of the 1940s Marathi and Hindi star Hansa Wadkar.
