Often the leather sweatband On a hat is dried out or there are moth bites or spots in the felt that u need to address, It's important to give the hat a good looking over first, in this case, the entire hat looked smooth and new, with tiny wrinkles around the sides of the crown, but there were sun-faded stripes on the top of the crown and a little moth bite. They get covered with powder and dust and when u brush it u can sometimes see more things u want to hide. If the flaws are anywhere near the top of the hat,a lot of times u can lower the crown,or change it to a teardrop shaped crown,so that the flaws are hidden within little folds & valleys, where nobody can see them. In this case, I personally would have loved to keep it center crease, because I like my hats as high as possible, but I wanted to hide the beached out stripes and the little moth bite,so I went for the Teardrop..plus it looked good. If it looked bad, i would have just left the flaws in plain site and forgotten about the teardrop, they weren't that bad anyway. It's just that the rest of the hat was almost flawless,it had a $22.50 original price tag on it,so we know it's old..very old. To have an authentic hat from that era in a desirable size, color, brim size..the super-wide ribbon, clean as a whistle..it's just cool,I think it's a hat that's meant to be worn and enjoyed and a teardrop probably would look good on Anthony,it'll look a little edgier and sleeker on top,and look even better after it gets broken in and rumpled up a little.. hats like that you usually see in black and white, on vintage TV shows, like "Superman" or "The Honeymooners" it's authentic, and should be shaped in an authentic way, the way some average guy on the street would have worn it back then.. Whole shaping a hat for someone, i think of their height, width of face, shoulders, etc I also think of their lifestyle. are they casual? or business-like when they wear their hats? What would look cool on them, and what would get the best out of that particular hat. Sometimes, a hat looks perfect out of the box from the manufacturer. with no steaming at all...like my teal blue Borsalino, and the green one I wear. I had them a while, but I never changed a single thing, I even left the original tags on. I think it's perfect, for me,that is..off the shelf. other times, a hat just needs to be taller or shorter on top, just to compliment a customer's height. it's like hemming the pant legs on a suit..we come in all heights, so we require different height hat crowns many of my customers prefer a lower, more streamlined crown height..it's also a taste issue, we have different ideas of what's cool. New hat wearers usually think the crown looks too high on everything, and want a lower crown...then they get used to it later on. More experienced hat wearers like high crowns sometimes because they start discovering vintage hats and looking at old photos of Bogart in the 1940's.The crowns were super high and rectangular then, and that shape is hard to find these days, Often they are custom made,non-production styles. Big hat companies know it's less risky to keep the crowns low and make everything else nostalgic. We do have these hats custom made for us by a famous hat brand from the old days, the wide ribbon, the high crown, shaped to order, not pre-shaped.the wide, ribbon binding on the edge of the brim and the high, boxy, "Bogart-like" crown. it's authentic, and for connoisseurs or lovers of the nostalgic,'swing era" style...let's face it, old hats like that are cool, but when we star off wearing brimmed hats we are self conscious, and want to keep things as subtle as possible...As your style evolves, you may choose larger brims, more interesting colors and styles..stuff like high, boxy crowns.
