With the third anniversary of Those Great Locomotives fast approaching (April 10th to be precise!), I thought it appropriate to remake the very first episode of the series with more sources at my fingertips, in an attempt to provide a video suffering less from my dated equipment and style. The reputation of the London & North Eastern Railway's A2/3s is a turbulent one. Some people deem them sacrilege, others can look beyond their apparent ugliness. But were they any good as express engines? Or were they but humble mixed-traffic workhorses?
