Poland and Norway in a changing geopolitical landscape

In May 2024 Poland celebrated 25th anniversary of joining NATO while Norway has been member of the transatlantic alliance since its inception in 1949. In the case of both countries the idea of joining the alliance was driven by the need to deal with strategic asymmetries in their direct neighbourhood but historical experiences also have played a role in their decisions. In the case of Norway, the decision was driven by the fear of a more aggressive Soviet policy towards its neighbours. In the case of Poland, the decision was motivated by the fear of the revival of the imperial Russia that could pose an existential threat to the Polish state that had regained full sovereignty only ten years earlier. Norwegian and Polish membership in NATO is one of the factors influencing bilateral relations between the two countries. That many Polish citizens have chosen Norway as their new home also plays an important part in shaping bilateral relations. In addition, the fact that both Norway and Poland border on Russia that has embarked on a more aggressive policy towards its neighbours and towards the West also has played an increasingly important role in shaping their strategic cultures and relations. This seminar aims to present the early findings of the NORPOLFACTOR project conducted jointly by the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs NUPI and the Casimir Pulaski Foundation in Warsaw (Poland). The aim of the project is to develop enhanced knowledge of the security-related challenges, risks and threats Poland and Norway face in their strategic environment in the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and to conduct a comparative examination of national, Polish and Norwegian, perceptions of security and the impact Russian invasion of Ukraine has had on these perceptions. 10.00-10.10 Presentation of the Norpolfactor project Jakub M.
