If you've ever tried to learn any foreign language, then I'm sure you have asked yourself: "Which level should I even try to aim for? How long should I learn the language? When do I really know it? How far should I try to get?" – These are very relevant questions but there's also one more question which people usually don't ask themselves, but it's REALLY important: "How long will it take me to forget what I've learned and to get back to zero? How long will it take me to lose the language which I've learned?" There are different levels of learning a language and different rules as to how long it takes to get there. And also how long it takes to forget the language. 1️⃣ The Travel level (A1) On this level, you'll know a few basic phrases to get by on holiday or a business trip – e.g. to book accommodation, to ask about directions, etc. In order to get there, just get a book of conversational phrases and pick the ones that are relevant to YOU. Write them down and go through them over and over again. Or use flashcards. 😉 It takes just 2 – 4 weeks to get to the Travel level but keep in mind that you won't understand a lot. And you'll forget most of what you've learned in a month – half a year tops. 2️⃣ The Orientation/Basic level (A2 – B1) You have basics in the language and you start to understand how the language works. You understand a bit of what you hear and what you read, i.e. what's going on. You're starting to get the language. But you can't have a proper easy conversation without any effort yet. It takes 1 month – 1 year to get to this basic level (depending on many factors). Unfortunately, you'll forget it in about 9 months unless you get to the third level. 3️⃣ The Comfortable Fluency level (B2) On this level, you don't have to think about the language anymore. You just use it. 🙂 You can watch a movie, read a book, or talk to a stranger (and they don't need to slow down or speak more clearly). It doesn't mean that you don't make any mistakes – and it's not the goal. But you can use the language comfortably. I think this should be the goal for anyone learning a language because you won't lose the language if you stop using it actively. 🙂 It takes 1 – 3 years to achieve comfortable fluency. 4️⃣ The Professional level (C1 – C2) You can use the language professionally – as a translator or an interpreter, for business negotiations, or for legal purposes. You know all the nuances of the language, grammar is also no problem and you know all the exceptions. Your vocabulary is really wide and rich in many areas. This level is not necessary for most people, and it takes a few (2 – 5) additional years to get there.
