How to Anchor Veins | Venipuncture, IV Therapy, Blood Draw, Phlebotomy Rolling Veins

How to anchor veins: venipuncture (IVs, blood draws) vein anchoring techniques for nurses, phlebotomists, and more. One of the most important steps before starting an IV or drawing blood is to properly anchor the vein. The reason we want to do this is because veins are actually quite mobile. You may have heard the expression "rolling veins," and that's because they do tend to shift under the skin. Anchoring the vein will help prevent it from moving (or rolling) as you apply pressure to the skin and vein with the needle, and it will reduce your chances of missing the vein. Missing a vein can be very frustrating for both the healthcare worker (nurse, phlebotomist, etc.) and the patient. Therefore, securing the vein by anchoring in place can help reduce a lot of frustration. In this video, I'll demonstrate how to anchor veins using the thumb method before starting an IV or drawing blood. I'll also compare it to the C-hold technique for anchoring veins, which is no longer recommended in most of the newer guidelines. Disclaimer: when performing clinical skills, always verify the proper procedure and follow your facility's protocols.
