What's the difference between a boat with a wet keel and a boat with a dry keel? This video animation shows how our popular self-aligning shaft seal can be installed in a traditional "Downeast" style lobster boat (or similar boat) with a wet keel. In this example, a traditional bronze stuffing box (with packing) is replaced with a bronze bearing housing with a water lubricated bearing. Our self aligning shaft seal then attaches to the end of the bearing and is fed by a water hose to keep the packing cool and the water lubricated bearing cool. This particular setup has proven itself to be the safest (and most comfortable set up) on today's higher horsepower commercial and recreational fishing boats. The addition of the water lubricated bronze bearing housing helps to reduce shaft induced vibration while the self-aligning shaft seal helps keep your boat's bilge dry versus similar "dripless" style mechanical shaft seals (face seal or lip seals).
