They knew each other from working together at Alfa Romeo. Colombo's task was to build a new engine that would outperform the 8-cylinder GP engine he had designed for Alfa Romeo before the war. The rules of Grand Prix racing provided for the participation of cars with either compressor engines with a maximum volume of 1.5 liters or atmospheric engines with a volume of up to 4.5 liters. Colombo's extensive experience in designing supercharger engines determined his choice. The 1.5 liter V12 engine, built by Colombo, powered the very first Ferrari and, with various modifications, was installed in all Ferraris until 1950. This was the first year of Formula 1 and the championship winner, who won all the races, had an engine designed by Colombo under the hood. Only this winner was not Ferrari, but Alfa Romeo. After such a failure, Columbo was immediately fired. His replacement, Aurelio Lampredi, was to design and build a new engine for the 1951 season. Avoiding Colombo's mistake, Lampredi opted for a naturally aspirated 4.5-liter V12 engine. To save weight, the cylinder block and heads were made of light alloy. Each block had one overhead camshaft and 2 valves per cylinder. The engine was completely ready and tested in 1950. Installed on the Ferrari 375 F1, this engine showed a power of about 350 horsepower, never becoming a serious competitor for Alfa Romeo. However, its fuel efficiency allowed the Ferrari 375 F1 to compete on equal terms with Alfa Romeo cars. A change in Grand Prix rules made Lampredi's 4.5-litre engine unsuitable for GP racing, but his career was not over. The big V12 was installed in the limited edition Ferrari 375 MM sports cars built in 1953 and 1954. The first cars were equipped with "Tipo 102" engines, an exact copy of the GP racing engine, but later, for reliability reasons, the engine was derated and received the "Tipo 108" designation. Most of the bodies for the 26 Ferrari 375 MM cars built were made at the Pinin Farina factory. In 1955, at the Turin Automobile Exhibition, Pinin Farina unveiled the Ferrari 375 MM Berlinetta Sport Speciale, which showed the direction of development of Ferrari styling in the second half of the fifties. But this car was the last to receive a Pininfarina body; the design of all subsequent cars of the company was developed by such masters as Scaglietti, Fantuzzi or Ferrari specialists independently.
