Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company - Rare Seeds

Tour the grounds of Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company in the Ozark area of Missouri (Mansfield). Owner Jere Gettle introduces us to his company and its history. Jere has been gardening since he was a child. He traveled in his to Mexico, Thailand, Guatamala, Belize and Cambodia in his 20's. He met people who shared their vegetables that were handed down through generations. The seeds of these varieties were saved because they produced vegetables that were resistant to insects and disease in their areas. They were not necessarily uniform for shipping. The Business timeline: 1993 - his first garden in Missouri Joined Seed Savers and exchanged seeds with people around the US, Australia and Iraq. Starting saving his own seeds. 1998 - Sent his first price list to about 150 people and broke even. 1999 - Sales increased 40X 2000 - sales abut the same as 1999 and increased every year since. 2008 & 2009 - increased 200% each of these years. 2014-Now sends out about 150,000 orders per year. This year he is trialing several thousand varieties of vegetables, flowers, fruits and more. Resources for his seeds: 100 varieties come from his farm. Others come from a network ao over 100 small farmers who save their own seeds and 12 to 20 seed saving organizations and commercial seed growers.n They do no sell any seeds with US patents on them (hybrids). Jere spends some time explaining these terms: Heritage, heirloom and antique seeds- old vegetables of which tthe seeds can be saved and the product remains true to the original. Open pollinated and Non GMO. Heritage is mainly used in Europe and Canada. GMO seeds- Genetically Modified Organism. Genes have been added from another species. Not hybrid and can be open pollinated. Hybrid seeds - cross between two species that will not stay true in the next generation. Open Pollinated Non Hybrid seeds can be kept by the home gardener and developed over years to give you the fruit you most desire. Here are some example. If you save the seeds with the most favorable traits, such as: Larges fruit Smallest fruit Most insect resistant most disease resistant best color The possibilities are endless and it is fun! BAKER CREEK Historic Farm and Village They have developed a village to showcase the way things were done on farms in the past. They started festivals in 2000 and host them the first Sunday of every month (March-October) with a weekend long festival on the first Sunday in May. You can observe things like soap making, candle making, beekeeping, gardening, raising animals, food supply, cooking as well as live music. It is an educational experience. Jere concludes with a discussion the deterioration of nutritional value of many of our foods today due to hybridization for mass marketing. check out their website: https://www.rareseeds.com
