Global Humanitarian Funding, Kenya & other topics - Daily Press Briefing (26 June 2024)

Noon Briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: - Global Humanitarian Funding - Kenya - Sudan - South Sudan - Occupied Palestinian Territory - Security Council - International Days - Guests Today and Tomorrow GLOBAL HUMANITARIAN FUNDING The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that halfway into 2024, just 18 per cent – or $8.8 billion – of the $48.7 billion needed to help people in need around the world this year has been received. These funding gaps have real consequences for the lives of millions of people, and the UN encourages donors to continue to contribute generously to humanitarian response plans. OCHA warns that the consequences of this underfunding have been particularly acute in the nine most underfunded crises: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Honduras, Mali, Myanmar and Sudan. At 1:15pm this afternoon, as part of the Economic and Social Council’s Humanitarian Affairs Segment, there will be an event in Conference Room 7 entitled “Underfunding and the Cost of Inaction: How to address one of the main challenges to humanitarian response.”  KENYA In a statement, the Secretary-General expressed his concerns over the reported violence in Kenya connected to protests and street demonstrations.
