Replacing Plastic Couplers with Kadee Metal Knuckle Couplers

Thanks for watching. In this video I show some of the problems associated with plastic couplers such as bachmann ez mate, proto couplers, and others. I replace my couplers in this video with Kadee #148 and Kadee #158 couplers. I also have a few Kadee #5 couplers. I prefer the whisker couplers due to the simplicity. They are a bit more expensive, but to me it's worth it. I also show how to check the coupler height for proper operation, using a kadee coupler gauge, as well as my intermountain es44dc es40dc. In some cases you will need to use offset coupler knuckles, or use shims to make sure the heights match up properly. If they do not match, then the cars could come uncoupled during operation. The Kadee coupler gauge includes little shims for the trucks to make everything line up. Many club railroads require kadee metal couplers because of their reliability.
