Ludvig Aberg Swing Analysis: Shaft Plane Approach is the Secret Sauce

Ludvig Aberg has proven that he can hit the ball as well as anyone, as evidenced by a 61-61 finish at the RSM Tour event with tournament leading strokes gained driving and approach. His swing is mostly conventional other than an extra strong grip (think Duval or Zach Johnson), and his body type seems like the new normal for Tour players, 6 foot 3 and 190 no body fat pounds. If there is one thing that I believe he could improve on (that’s scary) it would be his upper body backing away from the ball in transition and his pelvis leveling out, which in most players would be a problem, as usually with that combination the right leg pushes too hard toward the ball and the player gets “stuck” with the club trapped behind the arms. However, Aberg may not want to fix this at all as his compensation is to bring the club toward the ball from P6 to P7 with his hands extremely close to his body and his shaft (at least with the irons) almost exactly covering his original shaft plane. I put him side by side with 3- time major winner Vijay Singh (and 34 Tour wins), a player who also brought his arms and hands through impact about as close to his body as possible.
