The liver is the largest organ in our body and it performs many functions. It produces bile which is a liquid that helps break down fats when they are absorbed from our intestines into our blood stream. The liver also stores sugar and fat, neutralizes toxins, and helps control blood pressure by regulating sodium levels in the blood. The pancreas on the other hand is a digestive organ that produces enzymes that help digest food. It also produces insulin, which helps the body use sugar. Both of them are very important, but there are some disorders that can affect them and prevent them from doing what your body needs. Liver Disorders: There are many disorders that can impact the liver, but the most common ones are the following: Acute liver failure: which occurs when the liver loses most of its functionality in a short period of time, which can happen after an infection or an untreated fatty liver disease for a long time. Cirrhosis: it occurs when scar tissue forms on the liver, interfering with its normal function. It can happen due to alcohol abuse or other causes. Hepatitis: Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. It is caused by infections with viruses or other pathogens and can also result from certain drugs and poisons. Liver cancer: which occurs when abnormal cells grow and multiply in the liver. Liver cancer can be caused by alcohol abuse or obesity. Portal hypertension: Portal hypertension is caused by the blockage of the portal vein, which carries blood from your liver to your heart. This can lead to abdominal pain and the yellowing of the skin and eyes. If left untreated, portal hypertension can lead to liver failure and death. Treatment for this condition includes surgical removal of the blockage in order to open up the blocked vessels. Primary biliary cirrhosis: Primary biliary cirrhosis is a disease that causes damage to the small bile ducts in the liver. It's usually caused by inflammation and scarring of the ducts, which can lead to cirrhosis. Symptoms of Liver Disorders: Every liver disorder can have different symptoms, but generally there are some symptoms present in most liver disorders, which are the yellowing of the eyes whites and skin, loss of appetite, stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, fatigue, and dark colored urine. Treatment for Liver Disorders: Each liver disorder has its own treatment route, some liver disorders like the fatty liver disease, can be treated with lifestyle changes like reducing alcohol and fats intake, quitting smoking, and starting getting more active to lose weight. some disorders like the hepatitis may require taking an antibiotic, and if the patient has a type of liver cancer, other treatments are prescribed like surgery and other cancer treatments like chemotherapy. Pancreas Disorders: Pancreatitis: pancreatitis is when your pancreas becomes inflamed, and it may affect anyone, but it's more common in men than women, it happens when the pancreatic enzymes get activated in the pancreas, which can cause irritation and inflammation. Pancreatitis can have many causes as obesity, infections, Gallstones, and pancreatic cancer. When pancreatitis happens and lasts for short period of days, it is called an acute pancreatitis, but, when it occurs over many years, it is called chronic pancreatitis. Pancreatic cyst: A pancreatic cyst is a fluid-filled sac inside the pancreas. It contains digestive enzymes and other fluids, like bile juices and mucus. Pancreatic cysts are usually caused by trauma to the pancreas, such as from surgery or abdominal trauma. They can also develop in people with chronic pancreatitis Pancreatic Cancer: which occurs when abnormal cells grow and multiply in the Pancreas. Pancreatic cancer grows slowly but steadily over time, and it may not cause any significant symptoms until it is very advanced. Causes of pancreatic cancer include smoking and consuming a lot of alcohol. Symptoms of Pancreas Disorders: The most common symptoms of pancreas disorders are upper abdominal pain that may radiate to the back, tenderness and swelling of the abdomen, nausea, and vomiting. Treatment of Pancreas Disorders: Antibiotics are usually given to patients with pancreatitis, and sometimes Endoscopic Cholangiopancreatography is used to treat blockages of pancreatic ducts. If the patient has pancreatic cancer, then, other cancer treatments are prescribed, such as radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery is considered depending on the condition.
