The Fiedler Contingency Theory of Leadership Effectiveness

Fred Fiedler developed a contingency model of leadership that suggests a leader’s effectiveness is contingent on the fit between their leadership style and the situation they face. 🧭 This video is part of course module number 3.11.3 🏢 Program 3: Managing and Leading Individuals 🏘️ Course 11: Leadership 🏠 Section 3: Situational Leadership 🏁 GET STARTED 🧰 Free CPD Tools - https://gum.co/MC-CPD 🧳 Management Courses Onboarding Kit - https://gum.co/MC-ObK ($3) ⇨ Other videos in our Introduction to Leadership 🎬 Tannenbaum & Schmidt: The Leadership Continuum    • Tannenbaum & Schmidt: The Leadership ...   🎬 A Generic Situational Leadership Model    • Situational Leadership: A Generic Day...   🎬 Commercial Situational Leadership Models    • Commercial Situational Leadership Models   🎬 Robert House and Path Goal Theory    • Robert House and Path Goal Theory [Si...   🎬 Complexity, Leadership, and the Cynefin Framework    • Complexity, Leadership, and the Cynef...   📝 LESSON NOTES Fred Fiedler published A Theory of Leadership Effectiveness in 1967: https://geni.us/inBOF He developed a way to measure a leader’s approach to managing meeple, called the Least Preferred Coworker score (LPC score). - High LPC leader: tends to put people first, prioritize good relationships, accept weaknesses, and like to help and please others. - Low LPC leader: tends to be directive and controlling, keen to prioritize task completion, and takes a hard stance on poor performance or lack of competence. LPC scores do not correlate well with team performance. Instead, he discovered three other factors at play: • The extent to which the work is structured and defined, or unstructured and adaptive • The amount of positional power - or formal authority - the leader has within the organizational • The nature of the relationship between the leader and their followers - high or low trust and loyalty to the leader 🎯 Watching this video is worth 2 Management Courses CPD Points*. 🔎 Details below 🗒️ RECOMMENDED EXERCISES Fiedler suggested that the style of leadership - High or Low LPC - that works best is linked to thrre conditions (contingencies). 1. How well-defined are the tasks your team needs to carry out? (1 MC CPD Point) 2. How much formal power do you have, as a leader? (1 MC CPD Point) 3. How would you characterize the relationship between you and your team members? (2 MC CPD Points) 📚 RECOMMENDED READING There are a vast number of Leadership books - perhaps more than on any other management-related topic. And there is also a huge range represented in different lists of the best. This no-doubt reflects the different contexts for leadership. So, any recommended reading list of leadership books must be particularly subjective. I have chosen those that made me think, and which are of particular value to managerial leaders: not sportspeople, military leaders, or CEOs.
