A tour around Sissinghurst Castle Gardens in Kent. This Elizabethan manor house surrounded by beautiful gardens is part of our Historic England series of videos. 🔗    • Historic England   We will take you on a tour of 'the Castle', and more importantly, the grounds and gardens redesigned in the 1930s by Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson, the last private owners of Sissinghurst Castle, before being handed over to the National Trust in 1967. However, the history of Sissinghurst dates back to Saxon times when it was known as Saxenhurst, and stated as a pig farm. Its current buildings date from Elizabethan times, and in its day, the manor house was extensive. However, in the 18th Century, it was leased to the British government, who used the buildings as a makeshift prison for French sailors in the 7 Years War. They revolted at the squalid conditions and burned down the majority of the original manor house. The environment you see before you today is the vision of Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicholson, who created a series of gardens that are now the main attraction.
