From the age of two, she began learning the art of embroidery from her mother, Feryal Abbasi-Ghnaim, a celebrated artist. Wafa's book, Tatreez & Tea: Embroidery and Storytelling in the Palestinian Diaspora, showcases the traditional patterns taught by her mother and is a vital document of cultural preservation. As the first-ever Palestinian embroidery instructor at the Smithsonian Museum and a Collections Specialist for the Museum of the Palestinian People in Washington, D.C., Wafa is a pioneer in her field. She also serves as a researcher for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Islamic Arts Department. In 2016, she founded The Tatreez Institute, a global arts education initiative that extends her mother's legacy of teaching and sharing Palestinian embroidery.
