Merriwa Tropical Grass Trial - Autumn 2020

Merriwa Pasture Demonstration Site is 10km east of Merriwa on the Alker family’s Alcherinca property. The partnership was developed in 2015 by Hunter Local Land Services, Sustainable Ag officer, Sarah Giblin and landholder, David Alker supported by Upper Hunter Sustainable Farmers Group and funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program. The plan is to showcase new pasture species and varieties for local Upper Hunter farmers to consider for their sustainable grazing systems. The site sits in an active pasture system with chocolate basalt soils typical of the Merriwa Plateau and is conveniently located for tours adjacent to the Scone Road. The site has hosted regular field days however due to COVID-19 restrictions, we have put together this video tour from footage filmed this Autumn 2020. Get a closeup look at the tropical grasses, tropical and temperate legumes flourishing in the heavy basalt soils at Alcherinca, 10km east of town on the Scone Road. Get some tips from Sustainable Ag Extension officer, Sarah Giblin on establishment, grazing management, pasture pests, and some new tropical varieties hitting their straps in the Upper Hunter including the hardy, non-bloating legume, Desmanthus and the Butterfly Pea.
