We are restricted to 2 waterings a week. I have gone further than this and limited my watering to once a week. This has resulted in a dry, dormant, dead-looking lawn and thus a potential HOA violation. But not anymore because in this video we will explore how to maintain green grass during a drought that is sure to keep the pesky HOA enforcers happy. I’m testing 3 green grass paints that are advertised as being kid & pet safe, non-toxic, and waterproof. Up for review are: Covinton’s “Green Grass Paint” PetraTool’s “Sprayer’s Green Grass Paint” EnviroColor’s “Grass Paint” Applied with the HDX hand pump sprayer, 1 gallon capacity (https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-1-Gal.... RESULTS Top choice: ENVIRO COLOR 4evergreen Grass & Turf paint. (https://www.lowes.com/pd/EnviroColor-.... This paint is thicker and looks like it’s oil-based. It goes on evenly and is quite dark at the dilution rate of 9 oz per gallon. It is second place for cost at $10.37 per diluted gallon. I paid $37.13+tax for 32 oz. Second Choice: COVINGTON Green Grass Paint (https://www.amazon.com/Covington-Gree.... This paint is thin but still provided a dark and healthy-looking color to the brown lawn and it goes on quite evenly. The dilution rate is 6 oz per gallon making it the most cost effective at $9.98 per diluted gallon. I paid $39.95+tax for 32 oz. My third choice was: PETRATOOLS Sprayer’s Green Grass Paint. (https://www.amazon.com/PetraTools-Spr.... This paint was also thinner but required a higher dilution rate to achieve the dark grass look I was going for. The dilution rate was 12 oz per gallon making it the least cost-effective choice at $11.53 per diluted gallon. I paid $29.99 for 32 oz. Bonus color: SUPER MIX I made a mix of all 3 pigments at a rate of 1/3 standard dilution (3 oz of EnviroColor, 2 oz of Covington, & 4 oz of PetraTools) that was used to complete the yard with an additional 5 gallons of diluted product; until the nozzle mechanism of my sprayer became clogged and I was unable to finish. Conclusion: To achieve a lush dark green color for any normal sized lawn (mine being smaller than average at ~950 sq feet) would require at least 2 quarts of any of the 3 options tested, along with a backpack sprayer or a minimum of two hand pump sprayers (due to clogging). Total cost: Paints: $107.11+tax Sprayer: ~$11.00 including tax Grand total: ~$125.00 =================================== Update 1: at 10 days, still looks good. Update 2: at 17 days, no noticeable fading. Have watered twice since applying the paint. Update 3: The color lasted through the end of Summer. Update 2022
