Other names for anemia could include iron deficiency, B12 deficiency, and low blood levels. There are a lot of causes of anemia from what iron you take inside of you to how your bone marrow produces blood cells to carry that iron to the blood stays in your body instead of leaking out through menstruation or gastrointestinal losses. There are many, many different causes of anemia. Anemia can potentially affect anyone. More likely it affects women who are menstruating, children, people from resource poor countries, and also people with chronic disease. Some symptoms of anemia can be pretty vague, light-headedness, feeling weak, feeling tired, getting short of breath when you're trying to go up the stairs. Sometimes numbness and tingling depending on what kind of anemia. Risk factors of anemia include, menstruating being under 12 years old, any kind of chronic conditions like kidney disease, heart disease, diabetes for a long time. Also, bariatric surgery can decrease the absorption in the gut of iron. Any kind of other GI disease can also impact its celiac disease. Those can all be risk factors. Anemia is diagnosed fairly straightforwardly with a blood test. It's on our routine annual blood test that we do here at Medical Offices of Manhattan. And if something gets picked up as being a little unusual, we can also do further testing to diagnose exactly what kind of anemia you have. If you're having symptoms, it's important for you to just make an appointment with your primary care doctor and we will run tests, we'll see what's going on. ***
