Milling a 35-year-old Eucalyptus nitens (Shining Gum) that we planted on our farm in 1988. The tree was pruned to 6m to improve wood quality. The mill is a Hardwood Mills Australia GT40 bandsaw with hydraulics. This tree was harvested from a multipurpose riparian planting along our creek. Removing the eucalypt has provided more light and moisture for a 10m tall pruned Blackwood and similar height pruned River Sheoak that will now put on more growth. The stump and head of the tree have been left to feed the fungi and insects and thereby support other wildlife that feed on them. Harvesting trees for profit can be an act of conservation.
