Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - Sanctuary Fortress Synthwave Medley

I've wanted to do this cover ever since I started the channel. Made for a Pixel Mixers contest; the theme was "Space". Timecodes: 1. Sanctuary Fortress - 0:00 2. Ing Hive - 2:45 3. Dynamo Control Station - 5:31 4. VS. Quadraxis - 6:30 This track is divided into three movements (Dynamo is really just a buildup to Quadraxis here). I love all of the tracks that play in Sanctuary Fortress, so I decided to do 'em all at once. The first section (covering the normal Light Aether theme) is a little bit conservative. Still, lots of stuff has been synthwave'd up! Replacing the portamento sine with a polyphonic synth changed the feel a lot. The one really tricky bit here was the square wave part; it took some effort to keep it from sounding too harsh. Also transcribing those 16th notes almost killed me. Overall, though, the cover sticks pretty close to the original (aside from being condensed). Then we enter the Ing Hive, and things get weird. This is definitely the section that turned out best (which is neat, as the original track is often overlooked). I wanted to capture the distorted feeling of Dark Aether. At first I thought the triplets in the original track would be too awkward to incorporate, but then I decided to turn those lemons into lemonade and structure the whole segment around them. The rhythms were super fun to make. In general, this section was inspired by Ace Waters' ridiculous Megalovania cover's middle part which was in 11/8 and somehow still managed to have a really good groove. This is in a much simpler 12/8 (basically just 4/4 with triplets everywhere), but it has a similar feel regardless. I went back and forth on the big solo, worried it was too cheesy, but decided that the general cheesiness of everything else made it fit. Plus there's the little reference to Echoes' main theme; did you catch it? And then it dissolves into rain and has a weird Blade Runner-sounding bit. This music does play in a cyberpunk city, after all! As mentioned before, Dynamo Control Station mostly serves to build hype for Quadraxis. The beat here is simpler to help accentuate this. In general, I tried to make this section a lot drier-sounding to contrast with the super-reverby Ing Hive. Quadraxis was the most frustrating section to make. At first, I tried to do something really bombastic along the lines of "Danger 6:24" from Furi. This... didn't work. I wasn't really able to replicate the sound; everything I did just sounded really muddy and indistinct. Eventually I decided to scrap that and tone it down. This was probably for the best anyway, as it made the cover sound less derivative. I used the same synth pad as the other segments for the lead, and tried to give it a spookier vibe. The interpretation of the source material is pretty loose here, though those toppy hats keep it familiar. For the end I went for a crazy no-holds-barred noisy climax! The neat thing about really long stuff like this is you can get away with this sort of thing and still feel earned (I hope). Then we're back to the recurring 16th note/triplet motif, which fades into nothing. Original composer: Kenji Yamamoto
