The Future Of Green Hydrogen - BizTech Huìhuà Chat

Z/Yen and the China Development Institute (CDI) host a regular series of open discussions on technology and financial futures. In this event, we will look at the future of green hydrogen as a power source, and the ideas and technologies that are in development or in production. Most hydrogen currently produced is made using natural gas. As we go forward, hydrogen will increasingly be produced using renewable energy sources and the price of this production is likely to come down over time. Hydrogen and ammonia, produced using hydrogen, are potential game changers in replacing fossil fuels. In this webinar we will hear from experts from China and Europe on their predictions for green hydrogen in the transition from fossil fuels. At present, his research areas mainly focus on new energy economics and energy transformation. In June 2020, Tim Harper co-founded hydrogen refuelling company, Element 2, which is now actively rolling out a UK network of hydrogen refuelling stations. Element 2 works closely with manufacturers, transport operators and fleet owners to identify and develop sites and support vehicle conversions to accelerate Net Zero strategies. Tim began his career in scientific instruments before joining the European Space Agency (ESA) as an engineer responsible for detecting and identifying failure mechanisms in semiconductors and materials used in space. His initial experience with hydrogen involved launching scientific missions on the cryogenic upper stage of ESA’s Ariane 5 rocket. Since leaving ESA in the mid 90s Tim has founded a number of businesses ranging from scientific instruments (Nanosight, acquired by Spectris) to water treatment (Evove Ltd), to business intelligence (Cientifica Ltd). He has advised on large scale technical and M&A projects across Asia, Europe, North America and the Middle East. Dr Zhu Tong is the Director of Energy Economics Department, Chinese Academy of Social Science. At present, his research areas mainly focus on energy policy, enterprise strategy, and energy system reform under the framework of national energy transformation. In recent years, Dr Zhu Tong has devoted himself to the study of the transformation and development of China's energy (coal, oil, natural gas, renewable energy and power system). He has a profound understanding of the logic of national energy transformation under the trend of technological change, and his achievements have a wide social impact. Hugo Spowers designed racing cars for 15 years but got out for environmental reasons. He set up Riversimple as a sustainable car company, on the basis that a step change in automotive technology is both essential and possible. Riversimple is developing lightweight hydrogen fuel cell cars along with the strategies necessary for bringing them to market, such as a circular 'usership' model, Vehicle as a Service; this aligns the interests of business with the needs of society, ensuring that efficiency and sustainability are profitable and eliminating the economic barriers to bringing the new technology to market. Dr Liu Yu is the Executive Director of the New Energy Research Centre, China Development Institute. At present, his research areas mainly focus on new Energy policy, energy economics, CO2Emission, climate policy and urbanization. Dr. Liu Yu has completed a number of national and provincial research projects, providing strategic planning, financial advisory and corporate governance advisory services for many enterprise groups or listed companies. Dr Ding Ning is the Chief Expert on Energy Research of CCB Financial Asset Investment Company, a subsidiary of China Construction Bank. He led research on energy (new energy, nuclear power, natural gas and coal) for more than 10 years and has participated in a number of new energy enterprise equity investment projects. At present, his research areas mainly focus on new photovoltaic and windpower industry, energy storage industry and hydrogen industry. He published a number of academic papers and industry research reports. Rick Stathers is responsible for the development and implementation of the strategy on the Climate Transition Fund Franchise at Aviva Investors. As the climate change specialist Rick is responsible for facilitating the integration of climate considerations across Aviva’s investment process from the macro to the micro. He has been involved in projects undertaking climate scenario analysis, portfolio climate stress testing and working with the ESG and Sector.
