Daniil Trifonov: There are so many dramaturgical juxtapositions and contrasts and dramatic changes in the play. It just feels very dramatic. And of course it means a lot to me personally, because I won the Tchaikovsky Competition with the piece. BR-KLASSIK: Where does the B minor concerto rank in your private ranking of piano concertos? Daniil Trifonov: For me, every concert is number one when it is played on stage. But a piece like this can also be a real challenge: you know it so well, it is often played by so many great artists. It's very difficult to find anything new in music. It takes extra work to get used to a piece like this and find a personal approach. BR-KLASSIK: We Germans perceive this concert as typically Russian music. As a Russian, you can perhaps judge: Is this a cliché or does the concert really capture the Russian soul? Daniil Trifonov: Of course, the musical language and atmosphere of the piece is heavily influenced by Russian culture. But not exclusively. In the middle of the second movement, for example, there is a very familiar French melody. So it's just Tchaikovsky's genius at work!
