Anohana: the Flower We Saw that Day is an emotional drama & slice of life anime that explores past coming back to life, the mania that could cause, and how to "fix" it all. As if he put in some cheat code for life, Jinta gets the chance to see his childhood love Menma once again, even though she died years prior. Overwrought with guilt, Anohana explores how Jinta, Anjo, Popo, Yukiatsu, and Chiriko deal with "fixing" the past, and how they each take the chance in selfish ways in the anime. Did they want to help their old friend move on to heaven, or simply absolve themselves of sin? Even though the anime turns 10 in 2021, lets make like it's cast and get caught up in the past... Anohana may be majorly a slice of life, but the anime takes dips into other genres, like light elements of psychological, supernatural plot elements, or of course, a healthy heaping of drama. While Menma and Jinta may take up most of the screen time, the entire cast presents some great additions. Popo explores a sort of survivors guilt, Chiriko a feeling of inferiority, Yukiatsu the idea of masking trauma, and Anjo a feeling of unrequited love. While the series may have some issues with the development of it's women, overall it takes an emotional and in-depth look at a downright amazing story.
