Pick Thickness & Profiles in Difficult Keyways (Yale, etc)

How pick profiles can be more important than pick thickness when dealing with difficult keyways such as the Yale. I cover the difference between flat, round, pointed, and monkey paw profiles, and the differences between brands such as Covert Instruments, Sparrows, Jimy Longs, and Moki. I also demonstrate using 0.025" picks in Yale keyways, both with and without holes in the warding, and offer tips for how to navigate them. 00:00 Intro 00:08 Comparison of pick profiles (flat/pointed/round) 00:16 Profiles: Flat hooks 01:19 Profiles: Pointed hooks 02:33 Profiles: Round hooks 04:21 Choosing the right profile can be more important than thickness 05:02 Comparison of dimensions between profiles and brands 05:08 Dimensions: Thickness 07:00 Dimensions: Tip width 07:14 Dimensions: Shaft height behind tip 07:28 Dimensions: Shaft height @ 30mm 08:21 Shoulder shape and stress risers 08:51 The weakness of maneuverability 11:34 Impact of profiles on dimensions and maneuverability 12:02 Impact of brand on dimensions and maneuverability 14:20 Before you buy thinner picks... 14:44 Moki pointed — best noodles? 15:13 Limitations to my advice 15:30 Difficult keyways 16:20 $%&*ing Yale! 16:46 How to pick Yale (holes in warding) w/ 0.025" 17:02 Holes in warding (graphics) 17:38 Starting from base of keyway 18:39 Moving to ledge 19:47 Picking at an angle 21:00 Adding a ledge 22:37 Half-diamond OP 23:02 How to pick Yale (solid warding) w/ 0.025" 23:09 Solid warding (graphics) 24:10 Getting aligned 24:48 Moving to ledge (with more room) 25:28 Adding a ledge (same as before) 25:37 Links to Pick & Gut videos Notes: — The Moki pick scales that appear in the video: https://www.printables.com/model/9240... — The TOOOL/CI pick handles that appear in the video: https://www.printables.com/model/8815... — When I demonstrate the range of motion between a #3 and #4 @ 03:36, the #3 will be more useful for the front of the lock where you have a wider range of motion, while a #4 can be used at the rear of the lock where levering is more limited. It may take more maneuvering to get a #4 back there though. — The SSDEV profiles are popular noodles. I personally haven't used them yet, but looking at their profiles, the Moki pointed should cover the same usage cases and have more maneuverable and (probably) stronger shafts due to their height and shoulders. Sloped shoulders can add strength even if the shafts are shorter in height.
