Tensions rise between NZ’s government and Maori people over treaty

Tensions are simmering between New Zealand's recently elected government and Maori communities over a proposed referendum that could strip back Maori rights. The country's newly elected government wants to re-define a treaty between Maori and the crown - a move that's sparked anger and protest. Many Maori people do not understand why the New Zeeland government is pushing ahead with the referendum its Prime Minister has labelled as divisive. The treaty would be between the Maori and the Crown which was signed in 1840 which allowed for mutual prosperity. The newly elected government will meet with Maori leaders in Waitangi ahead of New Zealand’s national day commemorating the signing of the country’s founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi.
