The "Saints groove" is how the locals call the beautiful canyon that starts from the Gouverneto monastery in Chania on the island of Crete. A hidden and silent story of ascetics and saints who lived their life in that Canyon conducts a story that dwells from the depths of the centuries, a story that started from Egypt , where Saint John the Hermit came from. Continuing his life in Cyprus and Antalya (probably fleeing due to the spread of Islam ) he, among with 98 monks finally arrive in Crete. They never wanted to become 100 because the first and last for them has always been Jesus Christ. After their arrival in Crete Saint John the Hermit, wanting to live in total isolation, left the brotherhood and lived alone in the holy Canyon without anyone knowing his existence there. The day came when a hunter unleashed his arrow on the Saint, thinking he was a wild animal. At that day the hermit departed from this world. God, had not forgotten the wish the 99 hermits gave him when they all were together. The wish was to leave this world all together, and "As you believe, so shall it be done unto you", the rest 98 hermits, without knowing that their leader had died, left this life in peace at the same day. The adventurous history of 99 hermits, of pirates who plundered the monasteries and the miraculous events that occurred, could easily be a fictional story but every bit of it is real and painted with holy blood. The monastery on the top of the hill, was built in the 16th century and has not changed much since then. It is called "Lady of the Angels" and is devoted to Virgin Mary, our Panagia. The eight monks welcomed us warmly. The abbot of the monastery, Archimandrite Irenaeus, throws light over the centuries in this video, recounting those that happened, that expand our spiritual horizons. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Το "αυλάκι του Αγίου", όπως συνηθίζουν οι ντόπιοι να αποκαλούν το φαράγγι που ξεκινά από τη Μονή Γουβερνέτου, κρύβει στα σπλάχνα του μια κρυφή και σιωπηλή ιστορία ασκητών και Αγίων που έζησαν εκεί το βίο τους. Η ιστορία, βγαλμένη μέσα από τους αιώνες ξεκινά από την Αίγυπτο, απ`όπου καταγόταν ο Όσιος Ιωάννης ο Ερημίτης. Πέρασε στην Κύπρο και την Αττάλεια (μάλλον λόγω της εξάπλωσης του Ισλάμ) μέχρι που έφτασε με άλλους 98 μοναχούς στην Κρήτη. Η ιστορία των 99 ασκητών, οι πειρατές που λεηλατούσαν τις μονές καθώς και τα θαυμαστά γεγονότα που συνέβησαν στη συνέχεια, μοιάζουν με περιπέτεια που επινόησε κάποιο ευφάνταστο ανθρώπινο μυαλό αλλά είναι πέρα ως πέρα αληθινή και βαμμένη με αίμα. Ένας τόπος ιερός, που οι 8 μοναχοί της Ι.Μ. Κυρίας των Αγγέλων Γουβερνέτου μας υποδέχθηκαν θερμά. Ο ηγούμενος της Μονής, αρχιμ. Ειρηναίος, ρίχνει φως μέσα στους αιώνες, εξιστορώντας μας εκείνα που συνέβησαν και που διευρύνουν τους πνευματικούς μας ορίζοντες.
