Stocking 11,000 cutbow trout at Eleven Mile Reservoir

The Mt. Shavano Fish Hatchery stocked 11,000 cutbow trout into Eleven Mile Reservoir on Feb. 27, 2020. The cutbows, a mix of Bel-Air rainbow trout and Snake River cutthroats, are raised at the hatchery until they are 10-inches in length and then stocked through the ice - the stockings at Eleven Mile and nearby Spinney Mountain Reservoir take place in the winter to avoid predatory fish. Colorado Parks & Wildlife stocks trout in the winter through the ice mainly when the northern pike’s metabolism is slower. Pike are cold-water animals, and when it is cold, they don’t need to eat as much as they do when the water is warm. CPW had to change up a lot of its management of trout and trout stocking there because of the northern pike. Trout fishing is the bread and butter of the anglers in Colorado, whether in the streams or in our lakes and reservoirs. Thus, CPW manages its fisheries to take into accommodation the demand of its anglers. CPW stocks around 100,000-115,000 catchable (10-inch) trout in Eleven Mile Reservoir each year. Earlier this winter, 45,000 trout were stocked in December and over 44,000 in January. There will be one more stocking at Eleven Mile in March, and Spinney Mountain will be stocked with 45,000 trout also in March.
