Identifying with the future

With thanks to the Palestine Solidarity Movement BCP, who's march through Bournemouth I joined in January this year to film the excerpts shown in the film:   / palestinesolidarittmvmt   With suggestion you check out Medical Aid for Palestinians for the latest on the ground information and a way to donate: https://www.map.org.uk/ And with these quotes and links: “Israel’s bombardment and siege are depriving the civilian population of the basics to survive and rendering Gaza uninhabitable. Today, the civilian population in Gaza faces a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented severity and scale… Gaza today is the most dangerous place to be a child, a journalist, and an aid worker.” From an open letter from 16 leading humanitarian and human rights organizations call to stop arms transfers to Israel, Palestinian armed groups published by Amnesty. https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/new... "The Hamas and Islamic Jihad attack on civilians was totally unforgivable. So too is Israel’s current assault on Gaza, which amounts to collective punishment of the Palestinians of Gaza, the latest episode of its decades of oppression of Palestinians and denial of their rights." Jews for Justice for Palestinians, from its executive statement on Gaza. https://jfjfp.com/ “The current conflict raging in the occupied Gaza Strip, where the ICJ has ruled there is a real and imminent risk of genocide, has brought into sharp focus the catastrophic consequences of allowing Israel’s international crimes in the OPT to continue with impunity for so long. The world must recognize that ending Israel’s illegal occupation is a prerequisite to stopping the recurrent human rights violations in Israel and the OPT.” Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General. --- The situation in Gaza is a horrorshow. Who needs another film about it? Especially from an outsider. Can this piece I'm sharing carefully here be helpful to anyone? The scale of the destruction on the strip of coastline that Israel still controls access to is almost as shocking as the mumbled, muted responses from world leaders. And this tells us something. Something I've simply highlighted in this film as worth spelling out to the most of us not in Gaza. How do we tell stories of loss, when it's not our loss? When it's not our blood and suffering. I've wrestled with making this. That I've not let it go, despite how silly and entitled and perhaps sanctimonious this might seem if you're waste-deep in this or another conflict, signals something of the truth of now to me – an idea that we have to break out of silence and understand how our different worlds of experience can fit together. I didn't set out to script an Unsee The Future special but rather take my camera out with conviction and make a more spontaneous walk & talk – a "tropey-rangey bit" that I used to do in one takes about ideas getting to me in particular moments. But that's not what happened, exactly. The unscripted recordings felt like fragments of something and I kept going out to film retakes and new bits. What slowly came to me, very imperfectly and unscripted across the first weeks of 2024 was one idea of how we could frame a personal response to the suffering of the Palestinians in particular right now, and to armed conflicts in general. Just a small mental switch flick in our heads, perhaps. I speak as a helpless bystander, a man awaking to the way systemic privilege has shown me the world but also as someone thinking a lot about how we picture futures. Because, my God, do we have to. And the world as it is doesn't want us to. May Gazans in their loss help us awake to new ideas of what could be sacred to us all in a new world. When we feel most under threat we can be quicklly at our ugliest. What we need when precarious is compassion and for someone else to hold our sign up for a bit. Reject the BS that you can't stand against antisemitism as passionately as any other colonialism. And please help me get on the march. Shared honestly with love, failing and openness to learn. T. x PS: I've written three UTF expos touching on aspects of my distant experience with Israel but the latest is very loosely linked to this film – with a very different tone.
