BIGMouthPiece™ for Alto Clarinet ~ Big easy sound with a tenor sax reed The alto clarinet is often described as stuffy and lacking depth. The low clarion may be fuzzy and unstable, especially over the break. BIGMouthPiece transcends these weaknesses with an innovative design using a tenor sax reed and other unique features. First I demonstrate the ease of slurring over the register break including the MOST difficult intervals (middle-D to B or C over the break). With a traditional mouthpiece, these slurs would be hit-or-miss, or bumpy at best. Next, I demonstrate a chromatic run from the bottom up to show the depth and uniformity of the tone, and the accuracy of pitch. I missed on the last two notes BUT after recording, I made a design adjustment that fixed the altissimo. It now plays consistently, even with a soft reed. In Part II, I'll compare the sound to that of a traditional alto MP.
