KELHAM ISLAND | A drive around Kelham Island and Neepsend districts of Sheffield

KELHAM ISLAND SHEFFIELD | A drive around the Kelham Island and Neepsend districts of North Sheffield , with a look at the various pubs, bars, restaurants and businesses there. Subscribe to the Sheffield Videos Youtube Page here 👉 https://bit.ly/sheffieldvideos Kelham Island is one of Sheffield’s oldest manufacturing sites. The manmade island was formed in the 1100s, when a stream was diverted to power a nearby mill. However, as industrial activity has moved on, the area has undergone a significant transformation in recent years and quietly become one of the most exciting parts of the city. The remains of the numerous cutlery and steel works, factories and workshops is part of what gives the area its distinct charm, except nowadays these buildings house everything from indie shopping arcades to microbreweries and galleries. With its iconic Bessemer Converter and Europe’s largest working steam engine on display, Kelham Island Museum stands a proud reminder of the Sheffield’s industrial history and is great place to learn more about this significant heritage. Sheffield’s proud history of beer goes almost hand in hand with its industry, as small but numerous breweries formed during the industrial revolution, providing refreshment to men in factories. So it’s not surprising that Kelham Island has long been at the forefront of Sheffield's brewing reputation and has become a mecca for renowned real ale pubs such as the Kelham Island Tavern, The Fat Cat, The Riverside and Gardener’s Rest. We begin this tour outside Globe Works, a former cutlery factory situated in the City of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England on Penistone Road in the suburb of Kelham Island. The Works are a Grade II Listed Building which in the late 1980s were renovated to provide modern office space. It is part of the Kelham Island Conservation Area. Turning left past Globe Works onto Green Lane we pass The Milestone Restaurant before driving on to Cornwall Works and The Grind Cafe. As we move on we leave Green Lane and move into Alma Street and on our left is The Gatehouse in Little Kelham, and past that The Fat Cat, a famous Sheffield pub. The Alma was put up for auction in 1981. It was purchased on 29th July by Dave Wickett and Bruce Bentley and opened as The Fat Cat on 21st August 1981. At the opening the first pint was officially pulled by the Sheffield footballing icon, Derek Dooley. Just past the Fat Cat is the entrance to Kelham Island Museum, Kelham Island Brewery, The Loft Bar, The Kelham Island Brewery Shop, Craft and Dough Pizza Restaurant and Bar, and Kelham Square. We then cross over Rutland Road and come to Cutlery Works and The Gardeners Rest Pub. We continue along Neepsend Lane past The Kelham Flea and Monkey Works (used to be a pub there nicknamed The Monkey). The Farfield Inn is next up on the corner of Hillfoot Road which we travel along, before Hillfoot Road, Hoyland Road, and Parkwood Road before coming back onto Neepsend Lane to visit Kelham Island from the opposite direction. This Kelham Island tour continues on to take a look at other Sheffield landmarks.. Hope you enjoyed this Sheffield drive. ——————————— SHEFFIELD VIDEOS ——————————— Sheffield Videos is a brand new YouTube channel for videos exploring the City of Sheffield including walk throughs, walkarounds, and drive through video tours of the city.
