Best Buy closure provides new opportunity for Brooklyn Center

As Best Buy bid its final adieu to its big box stores in Brooklyn Center and Edina Thursday, customer James Walters saw an opportunity to snag a deal. "I've been stopping by a couple times to see what they've got" said Walters. "I bought a sound bar from here, and I bought a washer and dryer from Edina, which is also closing." The local Best Buy store closures this week are part of a larger business strategy by the retailer to reduce its overall square footage in favor of smaller stores focused on product interactivity and better service. A total of 50 Best Buy stores across the country will close this year including a store location in Rogers. For Brooklyn Center, the local store closure creates a vacant 5-acre site just as city officials are working to bring in new business to the community. "There's a lot of opportunity in this city with development," said Assistant City Manager Vickie Schleuning. According to Schleuning, last year Brooklyn Center saw $68 million in construction for both commercial and residential properties. A large share of that includes the development of Shingle Creek Crossing, a retail-based project on the site of the former Brookdale Mall. The Shingle Creek Crossing redevelopment includes a new Wal-Mart store which will open in the fall as well as a new LA Fitness and other retail shops and services. "We have so much development occurring, and it is exciting to see kind of the catalyst of what all the new places are going to bring into the city," said Schleuning. "They really do build upon each other." While the city does not own the land where the Best Buy store is located, Schleuning said city officials see promise and opportunity for that area too located between Shingle Creek Parkway and Highway 100. "We look forward to anyone coming in and proposing ideas that may really benefit and add value to our community," said Schleuning.
