Microbiology: Mycology | Yeast and Mould

Fungi include yeast and mould; notable for cell type that has chitin in cell wall and for production of spores (moulds produce spores while yeasts generally do not). Yeast is unicellular and exhibits budding; is gram positive if seen on gram stain and can be identified on a culture media via a wet mount. Mould is multicellular and exhibits hyphae; is generally not seen on a specimen gram stain and is not gram stained if isolated on culture media; rather, a lactophenol cotton blue [LPCB] slide is prepared to view its hyphae and structures. Exceptions: Possibility of dimorphic fungi. Dimorphic means two different states can exist dependent on temperature, therefore thermally dimorphic. Generally dimorphs exhibit: yeast at a higher temperatures (e.g. 35C) and mould at a lower temperatures (e.g. 25C).
