When we deny children the chance to develop toughness, resilience, ability to be teased (and be teased back) - normal human defences - we're harming their development. In this clip, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explains the idea of 'antifragility'. He argues that protecting children from small (or even moderate) risks has the counterproductive effect of weakening their development. From exposure to foods at a young age to social freedoms in childhood, Haidt believes that the coddling of our children has weakened an entire generation, and has resulted in an explosion of anxiety and depression.
