Moers Germany History of the city of Moers Moers received city rights in 1300 and in the first centuries the Spanish, Orange, Prussians and French left their mark here. In the heart of the city center stands the castle, the former moated castle of the Counts of Moers. After the death of the last countess in 1600, the city experienced 100 years of prosperity under the rule of the Orangemen. Maurice of Nassau-Orange, general of the United Netherlands, built a strong fortress. It combines the castle and the city. In 1702 Moers fell to Brandenburg-Prussia through an inheritance; the French ruled from 1794 to 1815. 1904 is another important year. The mining and workers' settlement for around 10,000 people was built in Meerbeck/Hochstraß. Between 1965 and 1988, the historic center was renovated and converted into a pedestrian area. Today it is the vibrant city center with many shops and cafes.
