When the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo in 1914, the First World War broke out and led to the downfall of Austria-Hungary. But even before that, there were already great political and social tensions in the Dual Monarchy, which is why a breakup of the Great Empire always posed a great threat to the emperor. For this reason, some political visionaries around the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand developed a reform plan for the ailing Dual Monarchy: the United States of Greater Austria. In order to bring all ethnic groups and nations of the multiethnic state under one roof, a plan based on the model of the United States of America was worked out. It was supposed to keep Austria-Hungary together and guarantee the status of a great power for a long time. But how did this plan come about, what did it look like in detail and why was it never implemented? We look at all these questions in today's video.
