After the defeat in Operation Bolo in January 1967, the North Vietnamese Air Force decided to change their tactics. They would now exploit the strong sides of their most advanced fighter, MiG-21 to the maximum. In August that year, the new approach would first be tried by a future six kill ace Nguyen Nhat Chieu and the future top ace of the entire War, Nguyen Van Coc. At one point, things almost ended up very badly for Van Coc but not because of enemy fighters.
