Accompanying pianist ‪@thuy-anhvuong9737‬ 0:00 Intro and playing part from Alcide Menetrier 6:45 Advice part from Miriam Fried Professor Miriam Fried and student Alcide Menetrier delve into bowing and the relationship between the left and right hand. In this masterclass, Miriam Fried explores how to produce the right character in the first movement of Poulenc’s Violin Sonata. She discusses Poulenc’s aversion to the romanticism of the violin, and encourages Alcide Menetrier to find a sound and vibrato that matches the style and character Poulenc intended. This involves playing with less vibrato and in shorter gestures, rather than forcing a lyrical melody. She also calls attention to the ambiguity of this music, in which the listener is often unsure what is melody or harmony, dissonant or in key, and stresses the importance of emphasizing those moments. Fried covers various other topics, including contrast in dynamics and character, technical accuracy, vibrato, and balance between violin and piano. What we learn: Finding the right sound and vibrato for the piece. Playing with technical precision. Highlighting musically ambiguous moments. Balancing with the piano. Concentrating on gestures rather than long, connected melody.
