Evan Stark, PhD, coined the term"coercive control" and he defines it this way, "...an ongoing pattern of domination by which male abusive partners primarily interweave repeated physical and sexual violence with intimidation, sexual degradation, isolation, and control." Does any of that sound like something that has happened to you? Stark writes about men because he says that coercive control is a 'gendered' issue. He writes about this in his paper, "Re-Presenting Battered Women: Coercive Control and the Defense of Liberty." Stark says, "The primary outcome of coercive control is a condition of entrapment that can be hostage-like in the harms it inflicts on dignity, liberty, autonomy, and personhood as well as to physical and psychological integrity."
