When Popstar Thomas Dolby Met Rockstar Michael Jackson. His Story

Thomas Dolby, the great pop rocker is a friend of mine. Also, on occasion a colleague. And on occasion a mentor. And on occasion a fellow traveler on the creative path. I asked him how his first hit record, She Blinded Me With Science was created and how it became one of MTV’s first video hits & one of the early provocateurs of music video. When he began to tell me the story, I realized that my subscribers and others would enjoy not only the story and the period of pop music history it was a part of, but also the way Thomas tells it. Thomas describes the London underground rock ’n' roll pop culture in the 1970s and early 1980s including many of the top stars like the Sex Pistols, Clash, Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran, Adam Ant, and Sting, in part because he played backup synthesizer for so many groups. When my documentary colleagues and I first saw MTV and what was being done with Video Killed the Radio Star and She Blinded Me With Science, it opened a whole new opportunity to create without having to go to the networks for money. Thomas and others created a new video music form that became big business and provided fantastic opportunities for outsiders like myself. I thank Thomas and MTV. Thomas Dolby is best known for his innovative work in pop music and synthesizers, had an interesting intersection with the rock group The Clash and his involvement in the early era of MTV in the early 1980s. Dolby's connection with The Clash primarily came through his work as a session musician. He played keyboards on their fifth album, "Combat Rock," released in 1982. Notably, Dolby contributed to the song "Rock the Casbah," which became one of The Clash's most famous tracks. His synthesizer work added a distinctive flavor to the song, which was somewhat of a departure from The Clash's typical punk rock style. Dolby's first significant exposure on MTV came with his hit single "She Blinded Me with Science," released in 1982. The song was a quirky and innovative blend of pop and new wave, featuring heavy use of synthesizers, a hallmark of Dolby's style. The music video for "She Blinded Me with Science" was particularly notable for its quirky, humorous style and innovative use of visual effects. It became popular on MTV, helping to establish Dolby's reputation in the United States and contributing to the burgeoning culture of music videos in the early 80s. The Clash were a seminal British punk rock band that formed in 1976. They are often remembered for their influential role in the original wave of British punk, but their music also incorporated a broad range of other genres, including reggae, ska, dub, funk, rap, and rockabilly. ongs, including "Rock the Casbah." The Clash's influence stems from both their music and their politically charged lyrics, which often addressed issues like social injustice, war, and class struggle. The Clash were known for their energetic live performances and their commitment to their ideals, often clashing with record companies over issues like album prices. Their music had a lasting impact on various music genres and inspired countless bands and musicians in the punk and alternative rock scenes. The band officially disbanded in 1986, but their legacy as one of the most influential and iconic bands of the punk era endures. The first music videos aired on MTV (Music Television) when it launched on August 1, 1981, were produced by a variety of artists and record companies. MTV's format was groundbreaking at the time, as it was the first television network dedicated solely to music videos. The early MTV videos were pioneering in the sense that they defined a new era in music consumption, where the visual representation of songs became as important as the music itself. This era paved the way for the music video to become an essential element of an artist's creative output and marketing strategy. These days Thomas is a music professor at Johns Hopkins University.
