Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero on Very Hard Difficulty, No Continues

So I finally got around to playing this almost forgotten game in the MK franchise, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. Despite what people say about this game, I like it a lot. I am playing the PSX version on Very Hard mode, starting with only 3 lives and using no continues. This game is notoriously hard for a number of reasons. Mainly because of the enemy and boss AI, but also because of the incredibly difficult level design and stage hazards which will most likely kill you outright. If you know where these hazards are and know the stage layouts back to front, then the enemies are the only threat, and even then it can still take one enemy to fuck you up. If you have no idea what to do, you most likely won't like this game at all. Level Summary: Shaolin Temple: 00:00:40 Near flawless, no deaths. The Fatal was performed on Scorpion so that I could rematch him later on. Wind Temple: 00:07:23 Despite this stage having a reputation for fucked up jumps and one mistake costing you a life, I got through it pretty well. Would've been flawless if it wasn't for one mistake I made before the 3rd door (I thought it was the crumbling platforms instead of the swinging one, hence why I rushed and died). Fujin fight was well executed. Earth Temple: 00:14:38 Played extremely well but died from an unlucky axe swing. One thing to note on Very Hard difficulty is that the parts where you climb up and down ropes have spikes that go in and out, something which does not happen on lower difficulties. The Earth God was pretty easy as I had used a specific attack pattern (Roundhouse followed by a jump kick). Water Temple: 00:24:04 Really well played, aside from one bullshit death caused by a monk pushing me off the platform to my death towards the end. Had a bit of trouble on the Water God boss but managed to survive using a few items. Fire Temple: 00:35:32 This level was much more challenging, the real annoyances are the fast monks which move like crazy fast. The big guys are pretty bad as well. I had died to one of those enemies. Fire God boss was also hard but luckily I managed to defeat him by the skin of my teeth. Had it not been for a Healer I had used I would've died. Prison of Souls: 00:47:04 This stage was pretty badly executed, having died 4 times, mostly by enemies but once by a misjump (I clearly pressed Up on my controller but it didn't register in time). This was where I refought Scorpion as I had ripped his head off in Stage 1. The big Skull boss was pretty easy as well, using the same attack patterns as the Stage 3 boss. Bridge of Immortality: 01:00:12 This stage was also poorly performed, having died twice. Once on one of the big red robots with a machine gun (that guy is harder than the ones with the flamethrowers), and once by rushing and jumping off the rising platform to my death. I tried to save my Urns as I would need them for the Shinnok fight, though I was forced to use both my Shields and a Formula to lessen the risk of death as a result. Shinnok's Fortress: 01:09:11 Coming into this stage, I only had 2 lives left, and there were no extra lives left to be found. I took as much care as possible to avoid dying or having to resort to using any of my Urns, having to rely on Herbs found within the stage to survive. The only death was on Sareena, speaking of, I had let her live so that I could have her kill Quan Chi during the battle against him. I was forced to use an Urn because I had made a mistake in trying to freeze him, and I had no other healing items left. I should have used my combos and throws. Shinnok was a joke but I was unable to kill him because I had used one of my Urns on Quan Chi, so I had to exit via the teleporter. It doesn't matter anyway since all you get for killing Shinnok is an outtake video. Overall, despite the bullshit parts, I really like this game and I think it's a great addition to the series. I haven't done MK vids in a while so I thought this'd be a nice little return. Enjoy!
