EA Sports' NBA Live 2004 was released on October 14, 2003. At the time, Live (and NBA Street) dominated the NBA video game market while rivals NBA 2K, NBA Inside Drive, and NBA Shootout all battled for second place. For 2004, Live built on their revolutionary right-stick dribbling system, known as Freestyle, while adding a button to execute a hop step on demand (labeled Pro Hop). Additionally, in an attempt to curb a frequent complaint of user-controlled players not recognizing a layup situation and opting instead for point-blank jump shots, Live separated the shooting and dunking commands in 2004, allowing users themselves to decide which type of shot they wanted in the paint. Of the three athlete cameos in this commercial, Vince Carter was featured on the cover of NBA Live 2004, Carmelo Anthony the cover of NBA Live 2005, and Paul Pierce the cover of NBA Inside Drive 2003.
