Upon hearing the name Flash Gordon, many of us instantly think of the campy cult film of 1980, but he’s so much more than that. He’s the first superhero to participate in interplanetary warfare, fighting against robotic armies, and taking part in spaceship battles. Some even consider him to be the ultimate savior of sci-fi who has inspired and enriched several cinematic epics like the Star Wars franchise and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Back in the early 30s, Buck Rogers was doing great commercially, and King Features Syndicate was motivated to have a character on similar lines. They asked their staff artist Alex Raymond to create a character, and Flash Gordon made his first appearance in the January of 1934 as a comic strip. When a catastrophic collision threatens Earth with the planet of Mongo, Dr. Hans Zarkov invents a spaceship to go to Mongo and remove the threat. He lures Flash Gordon and his love interest Dale Arden to come aboard the spacecraft to Mongo, and the trio fights its evil ruler Ming The Merciless. Flash, Dale and Dr. Hans become a part of many adventures with different kingdoms of Mongo, like a flying city resided by the Hawk Men or the Forest Kingdom ruled by Prince Barin. Historians and researchers of sci-fi art consider Raymond’s Flash Gordon to be one of the most detailed characters. Raymond’s primary inspiration for Flash Gordon came from Philip Wylie’s 1933 novel When Worlds Collide.
